Mothers on the Margins

Every year between 350,000 and 500,000 women die before, during or just after childbirth. 99% of these women are in developing countries. These figures are unacceptable in themselves, but some women are more at risk that others. Indigenous women, or those from other cultural minorities, are more likely to die or face complications related to pregnancy.

Health Poverty Action’s new Mothers on the Margins campaign ask you to take action to change this – and working in partnership with indigenous communities themselves, innovative solutions can be found.

Why now?

The G8 met in Canada in June but it has let down the poorest people in the world. Genuine changes to end world poverty were not on the table, but even the narrow initiative to help mothers and pregnant women was disappointing. The richest countries in the world failed to commit anywhere near enough funding for maternal health, and have ignored the plight of pregnant indigenous women.

The next opportunity, the UN summit on the Millennium Development Goals in September, must not be missed. We need action now to help save the lives of indigenous and cultural minority mothers. Please write to your MP now to ask for their support for Mothers on the Margins.

What we are calling for

  • Culturally appropriate, accessible maternal health services, free from prejudice and discrimination

  • A voice for indigenous mothers to participate in and make decisions about their own health

  • Progress against poverty and poor health to be tracked by breaking down data into ethnic groups
