Regional Manager (East Asia) – Dr Zhang Jun
Zhang Jun has worked on Health Poverty Action’s projects in Kachin State in Burma since 1994 and was responsible for initiating our project in Wa State in 2001. He has co-ordinated projects in the border area including Burma and Yunnan in China for the past two years. He became the first programme manager for the area in March 2002. A medical doctor with extensive experience in immunisation programmes in China, Zhang Jun worked for the Ministry of Health prior to joining Health Poverty Action.
Cambodia – Andrew Martin
Andrew joined Health Poverty Action as Cambodia country manager in January 2009. During the past 10 years Andrew has gained a wide range of NGO experience mainly working on projects concerning conflict resolution and the provision of emergency health care services. He has mostly focussed on projects in conflict and post-conflict countries in the former Soviet Union and West Africa. Andrew has a BA in political science and a masters in human rights from the School of Advanced Study at the University of London.
Laos – Bangyuan Wang
Bangyuan started working for Health Poverty Action in China in 2003 as project manager working on maternal and child health in the Mid-West region. In 2006, he moved to Kachin State, Burma where he was responsible for developing our programmes improving basic health care services, tackling malaria, and addressing HIV/AIDS amongst vulnerable border communities. He started as Country Director in Laos in July 2010. Prior to working for Health Poverty Action Bangyuan worked for various organisations including Medicins Sans Frontieres Holland. He is a qualified Engineer and holds a Bachelors Degree in Public Administration from China Remin University.
Guatemala -Thomas Hart
Thomas took up his current post in April 2005. He is from Northern Ireland and has lived and worked in Guatemala since 1993, working on a number of Health Poverty Action projects as well as undertaking consultancy work for Mayan NGOs. He has a BSc degree in social psychology from the London School of Economics and spent several years as a political researcher for BBC news and current affairs in London.
Nicaragua – Dr Florence Levy Wilson
Florence took up her post in May 2004. Much of her experience is in managing public health systems and she has a masters in public health for developing countries from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Before joining Health Poverty Action, Florence was general director of health in the RAAN (North East Costal Region) and an adviser of the Autonomous Government and Council of the RAAN. She was also coordinator of the masters course in intercultural public health with the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. This post is her first experience of working with an international NGO.
Peru – Raquel Asencios
Raquel joined Health Poverty Action in Peru since 2010. She is bachelor in Social Psychology and holds two Master degrees in Public Policies and Project Management from universities in Belgium and Hungary. She has worked for the Ministry of Education in Peru as a researcher and as Project Manager for several NGOs working on health and gender topics in Latin America.
Horn of Africa Regional Programme Director - Tadesse Kassaye Woldetsadi
Tadesse started at Health Poverty Action in June 2005. Tadesse, an Ethiopian medical practitioner, received his MPH from the Universitae de Libre in 2002, and has worked with CARE International in Ethiopia as a senior health adviser and HIV/AIDS programme coordinator since early 2004. Prior to that, Tadesse held programme management posts with the Christian Children’s Fund (CCF), Ethiopia, after five years with the Ministry of Health.
Rwanda – Jean Claude Nshimiyimana

Sierra Leone – Regina Bash-Taqi
Regina has been working in both Sierra Leone and the UK over the years, supporting children’s development through NGOs and charities in both countries. Among her posts, Regina has been chief executive of Lighthouse Children’s Foundation, projects director of the Childhood Foundation, and director of Childworks Ltd. She speaks Krio and French as well as English, and has a masters degree in education and development.
