A Manifesto for Motherhood

The UK-based Manifesto for Motherhood coalition has recently published a briefing pack to increase political and financial support for reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health and survival in developing countries. It is aimed at UK parliamentarians and includes a series of key actions to which parliamentarians can and should commit.

The Manifesto for Motherhood is a coalition of UK-based NGOs, professional associations and civil society networks who believe that the world’s women – and its children – deserve better.

Indigenous peoples off the health radar

With only four years to achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), governments must act fast to close the health gaps affecting many of the world’s indigenous peoples. Read our press release on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People here.

UK Government publishes Framework for Results on Maternal Health

The UK Government has published its Framework for Results on maternal health. The aims of the Framework are admirable, although not enough attention is given to marginalised groups like indigenous and cultural minority mothers. We now need to see concrete action taken to save lives. Please write to your MP now to ask for their support for Mothers on the Margins.

UN Summit on the Millennium Development Goals

The UN Summit on the Millennium Development Goals in September 2010 saw welcome new initiatives on health, but was light on details and specific, time-bound commitments. Indigenous women were mentioned in the Global Strategy on Women’s and Children’s Health and we got good coverage in the UN civil society consultation, but we are still concerned at the lack of concrete action for women from these communities. We are now involved, with other civil society groups, in tracking the commitments made in the Strategy and putting pressure on governments to deliver real change for the poorest and most marginalised.

The Deputy Prime Minister responds to the campaign.

Nick Clegg MP has sent a response to our Mothers on the Margins campaign, acknowledging the barriers faced by indigenous women. Read it here!
