How long will I go for?

Most electives last between one and three months. It is possible to stay longer than this but it depends on circumstances within the country you visit.

What will I do?

Depending on where you go you could be volunteering in a hospital, rural heath post or conducting outreach in villages. You could be training community health workers and volunteers or working with traditional birth attendants. Or perhaps you’ll do some field research on topics like gender-based violence. You might develop health education material or a toolkit for health clubs. Drop us a line to find out more.

How much does it cost?

It varies depending on where you go and how long you stay. As a guide, a shorter elective would cost around £750 and a longer one around £1,500 or more. This is a contribution towards your travel and accommodation in country, a pre-departure briefing and support from our staff throughout your stay.

In addition to this you will need to budget for the cost of your return flights, visa, vaccinations, insurance and spending money while you are overseas.
