Treating and preventing TB in remote communities

We are working in the remote Tsumkwe region of Namibia to cut tuberculosis (TB) to such a level that it is no longer a public issue here, among this marginalised community.

The project aims to reduce the spread of TB and treat those who have the disease by:

  • increasing access to TB treatment
  • reducing TB-related illness and death
  • tracing patients who have stopped their TB treatment, taking them to the nearest health facility and putting them on treatment
  • keeping records of TB patients in the community up to date
  • visiting TB patients weekly to ensure they remain healthy and stick to treatment plans
  • educating communities about TB

When new cases of suspected TB are found, tests are conducted and those who test positive are taken to the nearest health centre for treatment.

Health Poverty Action works on this project among the San community with the Global Fund.

Cusi MapepeTo ensure that TB patients complete their 6-month treatment, Cusi Mapepe, a trained health volunteer, visits San villages and keeps a record.

Trained TB treatment supervisors regularly visit TB patients in communities to ensure they are keeping to their treatment plans and are recovering well.
