Health Poverty Action is working with other agencies to strengthen the health system in Somaliland through training and investment.
By building the capacity of health training institutions and workers, the project will help develop a more effective and sustainable health care system. It involves:
- developing training curricula for health workers
- providing books and equipment for health facilities
- training local trainers who will in turn train future generations of health staff
- training health workers with the skills and expertise to deliver successful mother and child services.
This project is being delivered in partnership with the Liverpool Associates of Tropical Health and other international partners, working with the Somaliland Ministry of Health.
Health Poverty Action’s primary role is to disseminate health education messages via printed materials and the popular radio soap Saxan Saxo, and to create public awareness of the improvements the project has made in the health sector.
This project focuses on strengthening the whole health system, delivering the health services that focus specifically on the needs of the poorest.
We have provided a satellite dish to the Institute of Health Sciences, to enable long distance training of health staff.
Recent broadcasts of the radio programme have included information on the improved maternal health care services available at Hargeisa Hospital and health education on the importance of antenatal and postnatal care for pregnant women and their families.
