Fighting malaria in Preah Vihear

Community MeetingHealth Poverty Action is helping prevent and cure malaria in more than 450 villages in two provinces of Cambodia, by strengthening the health system so it can provide better services.

More women and children become ill and die here than in other areas of the country.

This project is benefiting 44,500 families directly with services that include:

  • distribution of bed nets and their re-impregnation by trained village health volunteers, who monitor their use
  • training for volunteers on the cause of malaria, and how preventative measures used alongside traditional practices can reduce malaria-related illnesses and deaths
  • training for health staff in recognising signs of malaria, particularly among young children
  • outreach services including rapid testing and treatment.

To make malaria services more accessible to poor families, community funds are being established to contribute towards transport to health facilities, healthcare and the cost of bed nets.

Health Poverty Action is working in partnership with the Global Fund Round 2 Cambodia Malaria Programme on this project.
