China has greatly improved the quality of life of its people over the past two decades, lifting 200 million people out of poverty. The economic reform programme since 1978 has been the main vehicle for this progress.
Yet despite these achievements, major challenges remain:
- Over 131 million people live on less than $1 per day
- Poverty remains a major challenge for the Chinese government
- China is the most populated country in the world, with over 1.3 billion people, so providing health services for all remains a difficult task.
