Here at Health Poverty Action HQ we, like many, have been busy with preparations ahead of the EU General Data Protection Regulations (more commonly known as GDPR) which will apply from 25th May.
It’s been a bit like Christmas, but with our data elves working through our 12 steps of GDPR compliance. Whilst it might not quite have the same jingle, it is even more important.
We truly value everyone who comes into contact with us, so it is vital that we can provide you with the confidence and clarity on how and why we collect and use your personal data. With this in mind, we have updated our privacy notice, which we will continue to review and update and which you can always find in the footer of our website.
Over the past six months we have started using a brand new database and adopted a new retention policy, ensuring that we have consent or legitimate interest for all the data we moved across to this new database. That means if you’ve not given, fundraised, campaigned or been in touch with us in the past four years, we’ve not moved your details across unless there has been a legitimate reason for us to do so. The latter might, for example, include a supporter who has kindly pledged a gift in their Will, to ensure we can provide any relevant information future executors might need in their administration.
We’ve also been hard at work on all aspects of our supporter care, trying to ensure that everyone who gives, fundraises, campaigns, or engages with us has a great journey with us in which they feel informed by relevant communications about the incredible work they are supporting.
Amidst the bombardment of emails everyone has no doubt been receiving (ourselves included!), we haven’t sent out ‘re-consent’ emails out to everyone who currently hears from us via e-news. This is because everyone on our email list has chosen to hear from us by signing up to hear from us in this way (and has been through a verification process to confirm this). But we did have a big tidy up, with anyone who hasn’t opened any of our last 50 emails being removed from this list. We’ve found a nifty way to automate this in future, which means we won’t be clogging up inboxes unnecessarily. And, as ever, if anyone changes their mind about hearing from us, we always provide an unsubscribe option on everything which goes out to our email list.
At Health Poverty Action, we will be going through an on-going process of review for us to ensure we always meet the very highest standards of compliance with GDPR, and if at any point you would like to find out more about what we are doing please do not hesitate to get in touch.
