Health in Guatemala
Guatemala is now a middle income country and one of the most diverse in Central America. But it remains one of the most unequal countries in the world, particularly in the countryside and among its indigenous communities.
- Maternal mortality for indigenous women is three times higher than for non indigenous women.
- Only 37% of rural births are attended by skilled medical personnel, compared to 77% of urban births.
- Guatemala has the fifth highest chronic infant malnutrition rate in the world.
Health Poverty Action has been present in Guatemala since 1994 focusing on the municipalities in the highlands which are home to a large indigenous population.
We are currently focusing on empowering indigenous Maya people to bring about lasting change to the health of mothers and children within their communities.
