We’re heading to COP30 in Brazil

Next week, COP30 - the largest gathering for Climate Justice - kicks off in Belém, Brazil! But before we head there, here’s what’s been happening in the run-up:

June: London Climate Week
We chatted with Ambassador André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, President of COP30, who told us that “drug policy reform is without a doubt the elephant in the room and an issue close to my heart.” We couldn’t resist handing him a copy of our report ‘Revealing the Missing Link to Climate Justice: Drug Policy’.

August: Webinar: Legal Regulation for Global Justice
Ahead of the UNDP’s landmark paper identifying Drug Policy as a key development issue, we brought together experts from fields including land rights, racial justice and Climate Justice to explore why drug policy reform must be on the global development and environmental agenda, and how it connects to Global Justice.

October: ‘From Forest to Dust’ Launch
Our new report ‘From Forest to Dust: socioeconomic and environmental impacts of the prohibition of coca and cocaine production chain in the Amazon Basin and Brazil’. We also joined the Embassy of Colombia in London for Futuro Coca, a unique dialogue on ecological harm reduction, territorial rights, Indigenous sovereignty, and the ancestral value of the coca plant.

November: We’ll be in the Blue Zone
This week the The International Coalition for Drug Policy Reform & Environmental Justice, which HPA coordinates, received a last-minute invitation to the Blue Zone (the primary venue for official negotiations) at COP30 on 11/11. We’ll be hosting ‘From Forest to Dust: Drug Policies, Climate Justice, and Territorial Governance in the Amazon’ at the Colombian Pavilion, bringing drug policy reform into the heart of the climate agenda.
